Janet_exerciseFitness is for everyone. It’s not just for thin young women in leotards who can perform yoga poses. Whether you are 22 or 102, being physically fit can help you continue doing the things that are most important to you – whether it’s being able to continue living in your own home, playing with your grandchildren on the floor (and getting back up again), or taking that bucket-list vacation.

Janet Lee has been a licensed physical therapist for over 30 years. Her fitness programs are designed for older adult individuals at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of physical fitness. In addition to professional supervision, all of her group programs provide a fun, friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Better Bones and Balance®

lady_bendingBetter Bones & Balance is a group program for anyone over the age of 50 or anyone who has been diagnosed with thinning bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis [link]). Regular participation in this class will make it easier for you to do the things you need and want to do each day. Your legs will be stronger and your balance will improve.

The Better Bones & Balance Program (BBB) is based on research from Oregon State University’s Bone Research Laboratory. Study participants who performed balance and strength exercises using weighted vests reduced their rate of hip bone loss and reduced their risk of falls. The BBB classes are designed to gradually improve balance and strength to avoid falls and maintain independence.

The Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method uses gentle movement and directed attention to increase range of motion, improve flexibility and coordination, and avoid movements that cause you pain. Awareness Through Movement (ATM) consists of verbally directed, gentle exercise lessons that can be done in small groups. Functional Integration (FI) is a one-to-one approach to working with people. Functional Integration is painless, effective and widely recognized for its ability to successfully address serious muscular-skeletal and neurological problems.

Here are some brief Awareness Through Movement lessons that you can try right now:

Feldenkrais lesson: Sit better in 5 minutes

Neck Pain Relief with the Feldenkrais Method (2 minutes)

Low cost ATM and FI lessons are being offered the first Saturday of every month at Westhope Presbyterian Church, 12850 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga, between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. For more information, click on this link: http://westhopepres.org/invitations/.

Exercise for knee arthritis

I’m old enough to remember when the nutritional supplements glucosamine and chondroitin first came out, and how many people started using them as an alternative or in addition to standard pain relievers for arthritis. What many people don’t know is that follow up studies of these supplements showed that for most people, they are no …
